Expo

Expo also known as Parque das Nações got its name after it was chosen as the location for the world´s fair in 1998. About  15.000 people  live  in this quite large area in the northeastern part of Lisbon running along  the river Tagus.  In the past this was an area used for industrial purposes but it underwent big renovation in order to house the big Expo 1998 World Exhibition. Luckily after the Expo was over many modern residential buildings were built and many of the attractions remained and still keep drawing visitors. Amongst them is the Oceanarium one of the world´s biggest aquariums , the Atlantic Pavilion concert hall, the volcano fountains, the  suspended cable cars, the beautiful promenade along the river, great for running,  walking or biking and the see-through waterfall. Most visitors will reach Parque das Nações via the metro station of Estação do Oriente, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and  undoubtedly one of the most dazzling buildings of the development, resembling a cathedral of glass and steel.

Everything important or worth visiting around here pays homage to Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese discoverer: The new Vasco da Gama shopping mall is modern and has great stores, restaurants and a movie theatre. The Vasco da Gama Tower is the tallest building in Lisbon, at 575ft (145 metres), the concrete structure commands great views. The very tall twin towers of São Gabriel and São Rafael are named after two of Vasco da Gama's ships. They are home to office and apartment buildings. The Vasco da Gama Bridge was built at the same time as the Expo and is a modern structure, it spans 13Km long, it is one of the World's longest bridges.
Another big attraction is the new Casino Lisboa, boasting restaurants, bars, shows, exhibits and the usual casino games. Great fun!
