Azeitão
A charming village as well and quiet countryside. 15kms distance from nice
beaches as Meco, Alfarim and Arrábida. Perfect for some days with your familiy
or friends.
Near Arrábida is the
sleepy but prosperous agricultural village of Azeitão, known for its red wine
and some of the finest quintas (villas or country estates) in the
country.
Worth a visit is 15th century Quinta da Bacalhoa, a beautiful
Renaissance villa, restored by an American and now owned by a Portuguese
entrepreneur. Visitors are allowed to walk around the admirable gardens
(containing the oldest tile panel in the country depicting the story of Susannah
and the Elders).
Another grand building in town is the Távora Palace on the central
República Square, not open to visitors, but with a visible Renaissance exterior.
On the edge of town is the Fonseca Winery where visitors can sample
some of Portugal's best red table wines and see its assembly-line production.
Azeitão can be reached by bus from Setúbal.
