Principe Real

Principe Real, was planned out in 1860 as a residential neighbourhood, here you are surrounded by cafes, (some outdoors) restaurants, art galleries and antique stores. On the week ends the streets are very busy with people going in and out of bars late at night and into the early morning.  The Jardim Principe Real, surrounded by colourful buildings is small but wonderful; there is a huge cedar tree that has been crawling for years over a huge trellis so to train its long branches. Rua da Escola Politecnica is the name of the main street; it got its name from the old university of science faculty, which at one time used to be a school for nobles and a training school for Jesuits, now the Natural History Museum. The Botanical Garden which served educational purposes was designed in the mid 1800´s; it runs along the northern side of the building, and houses a variety of rare species.

The Rua da Escola Politécnica changes names every so often until it reaches Cais do Sodré and the river Tejo. Strolling down the street towards the river you reach the Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara; from this belvedere you have a magnificent view of eastern Lisbon and across to the downtown area.  Further down the street you´ll reach Bairro Alto and Chiado with its cafes, restaurants and fancy stores. Finally you´ll reach the train station at Cais do sodré, with trains going to Cascais and Estoril, another haven for restaurants, cafes and stores.
