Baixa 12
Baixa 12Completely restored apartment on a small hidden-away cobble-stoned
residential square in the popular bairro of Mouraria. The cobblestoned
former ‘Moorish quarter’ – roughly between the Castle and Rossio - is a
friendly and super-central neighborhood where Fado was born and which
today presents a mix of long-time residents and a multicultural
community, complemented by artists, students and other young people. The
flat (ca. 345 sq m) has a large light-filled living room with a stucco
ceiling, plus a balcony for smoking or picking herbs for your dinner.
Whitewashed walls and white flooring throughout. There are magnificent
views across the roofs of the historic city. The main railway station for Sintra (Rossio) and the green Metro line are a five-minute walk away, the blue line (Restauradores) little more. The Castle, as well as the historic Alfama, downtown Baixa, and chic Chiado neighborhoods are close by. There are plenty of good-value ethnic restaurants (Pakistani, Mozambican, Santomean, Capeverdian) a two-minute walk away, as well as a traditional and excellent-value Portuguese restaurant right next door. Traditional pastelarias and café-bars, convenience stores, post office, an ATM, bakery, bottle store and much more are only a few minutes’ walk away, as well as the Casa da Achada cultural centre. The concept of art gallery lends itself to this great apartment. It is decorated with care featuring designer furniture, paintings and sculptures. All pieces are for sale. There is also a small library where guests are invited to read or trade a book; leave the one you have just finished and take one that interests you. BaixaBaixa, or downtown Lisbon, is the heart of the city. It is the main shopping and banking district that stretches from the riverfront to the main avenue (Avenida da Liberdade), with streets named according to the shopkeepers and craftsmen who traded in the area. It was completely rebuilt after the Great Earthquake of 1755 with streets flanked by uniform, neoclassical buildings. This was Europe's first great example of neoclassical design and urban planning, and one of the finest European architectural achievements of the age (it is currently being considered to be listed as a World Heritage Site). It remains an imposing district, with elegant squares, pedestrianized streets, cafes, and shops. Old tramcars, street performers, tiled Art Deco shopfronts, elaborately decorated pastry shops, and street vendors selling everything from flowers to souvenirs, all lend a special charm to the area.
