Estrela

Estrela, west of Bairro Alto. ” Jardim da Estrela” is the focal point of this neighborhood. This lovely garden has a large playground and exotic plants and trees, a small lake full of ducks, various sculptures and a wrought-iron gazebo bandstand; there is a café that serves as an excellent place to take a break. Across from the Jardim is the Cemitério Inglês. Founded in 1717, it contains the remains of Henry Fielding (author of “Tom Jones”). The English –language theatre group  “Lisbon players” is housed in the Estrela hall and close to it is the British Hospital.
A pleasant way to reach or leave Estrela is by taking trams 25 or 28, which stops right outside the basilica, the 28 takes you on an incredible ride around the old Lisbon. It is a must.
To the south of Estrela is Lapa, the diplomatic quarter with all its embassies in what used to be private owned palaces. Here is the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, a 17th-century palace, which exhibits an amazing European art collection along with some Portuguese and Asian works. Walking distance and worth visiting is Campo de Ourique the neighborhood “glued” to Estrela.  This is where Fernando Pessoa spent the last 15 years of his life. His house can be visited. It is a great shopping neighborhood.
